Dr. Paula Helm studierte Kulturwissenschaft sowie Friedens- und Konfliktforschung (mit Auszeichnung) an der Philipps-Universität Marburg. 2012-2015 promovierte sie als Stipendiantin im DFG Graduiertenkolleg "Privatheit: Formen, Funktionen, Transformationen" der Universität Passau. Im Rahmen ihrer Promotionsphase unternahm sie eine Archivforschung in der Weltzentrale der Anonymen Alkoholiker sowie eine Teilnehmende Beobachtung in Suchtgruppen des Großraumes New York (gefördert durch den DAAD). 2013 war sie als Visiting Scholar an der New York University. Ihre Dissertationsschrift erschien 2016 unter dem Titel "Suchtkultur und Gruppentherapie. Vom anonymen Ich zum anonymen Wir", (Gutachter: Karsten Fitz, Christoph Wulf, Sandra Seubert. Mit Auszeichnung). Seit Juli 2015 forscht Paula Helm als Post-Doc an der Goethe Universität Frankfurt im Rahmen des VW_Projektes "Strukturwandel des Privaten". In diesem Zusammenhan hat sie eine intensive Kooperation mit dem parallel laufenden VW_Projekt "Reconfiguring Anonymity" aufgebaut. 2019 war sie Visiting Fellow am Centre for Surveillance Studies in Kingston/Canada (bei David Lyon/Valerie Steeves/Gabriella Coleman). Hier arbeitete Paula Helm an ihrem neuen Forschungsprojekt zur Praktiken der Entnetzung: Digital Detox, Hack the Earth, Internet Addiction.
