it Beginn des Sommersemesters 2022 tritt Dr. Encarnacíon Gutiérrez Rodríguez die Professur für Soziologie mit dem Schwerpunkt Kultur und Migration an. 

Wir heißen Prof. Gutiérrez Rodríguez herzlich am Institut für Soziologie willkommen und wünschen ihr einen guten Start an der Goethe-Universität! 


Kurz-Biographie von Prof. Dr. Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez:

Dr. Encarnación Gutiérrez Rodríguez is Professor in Sociology with a focus on Culture and Migration. She studied Sociology and Political Sciences and Romance Studies (Francophone and Latin American Studies) at the Goethe-University in Frankfurt, Germany, Université Lumière II, Lyon, France, and in Quito, Ecuador. Currently she is a Visiting Professor in the Chair for Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha (South Africa) and Faculty Adjunct Professor in Sociology and Modern Languages and Cultural Studies at the University of Alberta. She is a member of the DFG-Research Group Menschenrechsdiskurse in der Migrationsgesellschaft (MeDiMi) and a member of the international advisory board of the BMWF Network Project – Mecila (Maria Sibylla Merian Centre Conviviality-Inequality in Latin America), FU Berlin/ São Paulo.

Before coming to the Goethe University, she was Professor in General Sociology in the Institute for Sociology at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Germany); Associate Professor in Transcultural Studies in the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies Department at the University of Manchester, UK and an Assistant Professor in Sociology in the Institute of Sociology, University of Hamburg.   

She has been a Digital Senior Fellow at Mecila; Humboldt Feodor-Lynen Fellow in the Centre for Cultural Studies, Goldsmiths, University of London; Ford Research Fellow in the Five College Women's Studies Research Centre, USA; Postdoctoral Fellow in the Centre of Women Studies at the University of Albuquerque; and Visiting Fellow in the Centre for Cultural Studies, UCSC. In 1999 she received the prestigious Augsburg Research Prize for Intercultural Studies for her PhD Intellektuelle Migrantinnen. Subjektivitäten im Zeitalter der Globalisierung (Intellectual Female Migrants: Subjectivities in Times of Globalization). Her research has been funded by the DFG, DAAD, Humboldt Foundation, AHRC, British Academy, the EU and the Council of Research and Arts from the Land Hessen.

More recently she published The Palgrave Handbook of Critical Race and Gender (2022, with Shirley Anne Tate); Decolonial Perspectives on Entangled Inequalities (2021, with Rhoda Reddock); Migrantischer Feminismus in der Deutschen Frauenbewegung, 1985-2000 (2021, with Pınar Tuzcu). Among her publications are Creolising Europe. Legacies and Transformations (2015, with Shirley Anne Tate), Migration, Domestic Work and Affect. A Decolonial Approach on Value and the Feminization of Labour (2010), Decolonizing European Sociology. Transdisciplinary Approaches (2010, with Manuela Boatcă and Sérgio Costa) and Spricht die Subalterne Deutsch? Migration und postkoloniale Kritik (Does the Subaltern Speak German? Migration and Postcolonial Critique, with Hito Steyerl 2002).

Currently, she is working on questions of decolonial mourning; creolizing conviviality; institutional racism and affect in Higher Education; human rights and the coloniality of migration.
