TRANSCENDING CAPITALISM THROUGH REAL UTOPIAS

While capitalism has become more destructive both to the lives of people and the health of the environment, it seems to most people an unalterable force of nature. Social democratic hopes of taming capitalism by neutralizing its harmful effects through decisive state regulations have been undermined by the globalization and financialization of capital. Revolutionary ambitions of smashing capitalism through a ruptural seizure of state power, a coercive dissolution of capitalist institutions and their replacement by an emancipatory alternative lack credibility. Are these the only logics of transformation? There may be a different route that points be-yond capitalism: transcending capitalism by building emancipatory alternatives to capitalism in the spaces and cracks within capitalist economies and struggling to defend and expand those spaces.
ERIK OLIN WRIGHT ist Vilas Distinguished Professor am Department of Sociology der University of Wisconsin-Madison und ehemaliger Präsident der American So-ciological Association. Er gilt als führender Vertreter der modernen soziologischen Klassenanalyse. Seine wichtigsten Werke Class Structure and Income Determina-tion (1979), Classes (1985), Reconstructing Marxism (1992), Interrogating Ine-quality (1994) und Class Counts: Comparative Studies in Class Analysis (1997) sowie Approaches to Class Analysis (2005) haben weltweite Beachtung gefunden und gelten bereits als moderne Klassiker des Fachs. Erik Olin Wrights Vortrag in Frankfurt basiert auf neueren Arbeiten im Rahmen seines »Real Utopias«-Projekts, in welchem er sich mit den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen partizipativ-emanzipatori-scher Lösungen der institutionellen Probleme moderner Gesellschaften befasst.
