CHINA: STILL RESILIENT AUTHORITARIANISM?

Many Western experts, as well as many Chinese, expected the authoritarian regime to democratize or collapse after the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy demonstrations ended in bloodshed, but instead the regime survived and strengthened itself -- a phenomenon I labeled "resilient authoritarianism." But today the regime faces intense new challenges arising from social change, cultural shifts, environmental pollution, the rise of new social media, and other forces. We can identify what the regime has done to maintain its rule during the course of the past two and a half turbulent decades and try, on the basis of this analysis, to assess how likely it is to overcome the challenges it faces today and the kinds of challenges it is likely to face in the foreseeable future.
