 E-Learning-Tool "Social Research Skills"

The eLearning-Tool "Social Research Skills" is a self-teaching course for students about basic socio-scientific methodological and research competences.

An entry-level module facilitates a self-check to test existing methodological competences and to detect knowledge gaps. Three additional modules impart interactively basic methodological knowledge. Central learning contents are “The Expert Interview“, “The Standardized Written Survey“ and “Group Interviews“. The aim is to show respectively, how to plan surveys, which type of questions to be used, how to formulate the interview questions and which interview situations could occur.

So the self-study modules deal with essential socio-scientific topics. The eLearning-Tool "Social Research Skills" serves to check and to develop methodological and research competences and may serve as a preparation for the participation in detailed methods courses or for the students’ own data collection phase.

Module Contents

  • Module I is a self-check, which tests the students‘level of knowledge about the topic “Methods of empirical social research“. This test
serves to the students and teachers likewise to assess the level of knowledge of the participants and to find out, where there are still
       weak points and deficits.
  • Module II imparts qualitative techniques of interviewing, especially the guideline-based expert interview.
  • Module III is about quantitative techniques of interviewing, especially standardized written surveys.
  • Module IV refers to group interviews and focus groups.

The learning contents are presented in a multi-media form with texts, audios, videos and animations using the authors’ system “die Lernbar“ of the Goethe-Universität. It takes advantage of the multiple interrogation and feedback options provided by LernBar, in order to respond to different canals of attention, to make learning more varied and meet so different types of learners.
