Degree Programs at the Institute of Political Science

Bachelor of Arts

Why is there war? What is justice? What holds the EU together? If you are interested in these or similar central questions in our society then studying Political Science is just right for you.

In the B.A. in Political Science, you will learn to deal with a wide variety of topics from the three sub-areas of Political Science: Political Theory is concerned above all with the question of how political processes should be shaped. By contrast, Comparative Politics centres on the question of how institutions and processes within political systems (states, the European Union) really work. The sub-discipline of International Relations addresses foreign policy issues and other cross-border political processes.

Beyond the acquisition of specialist knowledge, the aim of the programme is to develop critical judgement as well as the ability to recognize causes of and ways to solve complex political and social problems.

Master of Arts

The consecutive and research-based Masters programme in Political Science is offered by the Institute of Political Science at Goethe-University Frankfurt and conveys deeper academic knowledge across the full range of Political Science.

The consecutive and research-based Masters programme in Political Theory is offered jointly by Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Darmstadt (Technical University of Darmstadt) and has an international focus.

In the interdisciplinary Masters programme in International Studies / Peace and Conflict Research, students are introduced to theoretically guided and normatively grounded perspectives on national, transnational and global socialization processes. The programme is offered jointly by Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Darmstadt (Technical University of Darmstadt).

The consecutive and research based Masters programme Comparative Democracy is completely taught in English.

Teaching Degrees

Studies in this elective comprise subject-related elements (in the fields of Political Science and Sociology) and subject didactics:

  • For the subject-related part, courses are offered in the framework of modules which at the same time also apply for the modules in the B.A. and M.A. degree programmes in Sociology or Political Science. In this respect, the subject-related studies in the “Politics and Economics" elective are fully integrated in the Faculty's other degree programmes. Students of the “Politics and Economics" elective are therefore invited to take part as major-subject students in all research interests at the Faculty, i.e. beyond their compulsory courses.
  • Subject didactics are taught in two compulsory modules, one of which is completed in the Foundation Programme and the other in the Advanced Programme.
