Informality in Economic Sociology

Informality comes in many different shapes and flavors – from informal politics and governance to informal work and business practices. In this course, we will take a closer look at the specific nature, origins, and effects of these different types of informality, and specifically their implications for  economic exchange, entrepreneurship, and overall economic development. We will explore how different theories and concepts of economic sociology seek to explain informality in markets and what strategies have been developed to address it. We will read and discuss well-established theoretical works on informality in economic sociology as well as very recent scientific contributions on the topic, and apply the literature to current events and debates in our seminar discussions.
