The research group

The Leibniz Award Research Group Transnational Justice focuses on different aspects of a critical theory of justice, from the grounds, uses and contours of the notion of justice within various social, political and philosophical contexts to the most important injustices of the current transnational order. A theory of transnational justice not only has to account for the transnational economic, political and legal affairs; it also has to rest upon grounds with universal justifications.

Therefore, it seeks to establish a transnational network of scholars from different regions of the world, including Latin America, North America, Africa, the Middle East, India and China in order to discuss issues of justice in a truly transnational perspective.

The group is funded through the German Research Foundation’s (DFG) Leibniz Programme, which awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Award to Prof. Forst in 2012.

The members of this research group examine normative questions of transnational justice by starting with the assumption that social or political justice in its core means justified or non-arbitrary rule. Their aim is to unpack this core meaning on the basis of  analyses of various struggles for social and political justice.

More specifically, the members of this research group study the uses of the concept of justice in various national and transnational social conflicts. Thereby they construe an empirically informed conception of justice that is rooted in a far-ranging and openly structured inquiry into diverse struggles for justice. Thus social scientific and philosophical analyses of disparate experiences of social or political injustices should form part of the justification of critical conceptions of justice. Ideally, such conceptions will already point towards existing possibilities for overcoming injustices.
