Open Science

Frankfurt Open Social Sciences (FOSS)

Following the recommendations of key players in the global science system (UNESCO, European Commission, DFG, etc.), the Department of Social Sciences at Goethe University operates the digital platform “Frankfurt Open Social Sciences" (FOSS) to make knowledge created by its members visible and freely accessible to the scientific community and the general public.

According to the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation, „open science is defined as an inclusive construct that combines various movements and practices aiming to make multilingual scientific knowledge openly available, accessible and reusable for everyone, to increase scientific collaborations and sharing of information for the benefits of science and society, and to open the processes of scientific knowledge creation, evaluation and communication to societal actors beyond the traditional scientific community. It comprises all scientific disciplines and aspects of scholarly practices“ (II.6). (see Website UNESCO)

FOSS encompasses these dimensions of Open Science:

Open research means open access to scientific publications as well as to theories, methodologies and data as the components of knowledge production.

Open teaching means open access to educational resources.

Citizen Science means the participation of members of the general public in research projects of scientists, where the citizens in return receive some professionalisation.

Doing FOSS

Goethe University encourages its members to practice Open Science. To this end, it provides legal advice and financial support.

On FOSS, all researchers and lecturers of the Department of Social Sciences can make their publications, theories, methodologies, data, educational resources and training materials (once again) openly accessible.

If not already done, Creative Commons licenses can be purchased. The CC-BY or CC-BY-SA licenses are recommended. They allow reuse in any context and ensure that the authors are named and that the original source is referenced. The respective license and a reference to the license deed of the Creative Commons Foundation must be indicated:

For the publication of research data there is this procedure. You have to log in with your HRZ credentials and then upload files in your profile under "myGUDe". Please note that GUDe is primarily designed as a repository for research data (and partially research software).

The general university publication system can be found here.
