This course offers an overview of theoretical debates and empirical themes in the field of international security studies. The participants will learn about different theoretical frameworks informing our understanding of security issues, including realism, liberalism, and constructivism, as well as scholarly efforts to bridge theoretical divides. We will discuss traditional international actors, in particular states and international organizations, as well as emerging actors, including non-governmental organizations and transnational non-state armed groups. In studying their role, we focus on security risks such as terrorism, organized crime, and cyber security, and on cross-cutting themes such as the changing nature of warfare and the security-development nexus.
