Protest and Democratic Quality

ProDem is an interdisciplinary project that aims to comparatively assess the medium- and long-term effects of the triple interaction between citizens, social movements and a specific breed of political parties (so-called 'movement parties', della Porta et al 2017; Kitschelt 2006; Mosca and Quaranta 2017) on democratic quality in Europe. Democratic quality is approached from a citizens' perspective as the acquisition of political, civil, and social citizenship rights through democratic institutions and processes (della Porta 2016: 8-9). We seek robust and innovative explanations for how social movements and movement parties, alongside shifting divisions in citizens' values, ideologies, and attitudes, have affected democratic quality in six European countries (Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, and the UK) between the onset of a global wave of protests in 2011 and 2019. The interplay among citizens, media, and political organisations is at the heart of our inquiry into democratic quality.

ProDem will generate new, timely insights from comparative analysis of democratic quality by combining concepts and methods from social movement studies, political behaviour and party politics, political culture, critical theory, media studies, and computational social science.

The project connects scholars working in Denmark, Germany, Italy, Romania, and the United Kingdom. The principle investigators are: Christina Neumayer (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), Claudius Wagemann (Goethe Universität Frankfurt, Germany), Lorenzo Mosca (Università Statale di Milano, Italy), Toma Burean (Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania) and Dan Mercea, (City, University of London, UK).

Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Programme

Das neu gegründete Global Health Justice Postdoctoral Programme, gefördert von der Höppsche Stiftung und geleitet von Prof. Dr. Rainer Forst und Prof. Dr. Darrel Moellendorf, vergibt zum 1. Oktober jährlich zwei Post-doctoral Fellowships. Die Fellows werden für eine Dauer von 10 Monaten Teil der Frankfurter Forschungsgemeinschaft, insbesondere des Forschungszentrums Normative Ordnungen.

Justitia Center for Advanced Studies

Das »Justitia Center for Advanced Studies« ist ein Forum für politische Theoretiker*innen und Philosoph*innen, die sich für die drängenden politische Fragen unserer Zeit interessieren. Ziel ist es, theoretische und methodische Perspektiven diverser Ansätze in Bezug auf normative Debatten über die Zukunft unserer Gesellschaften miteinander zu verbinden. Jedes Jahr werden bis zu drei Postdoktorand*innen eingeladen, sich dem wissenschaftlichen Umfeld in Frankfurt und vor allem auch dem Netzwerk des Forschungszentrums »Normative Ordnungen« anzuschließen, um hier ihre innovativen Forschungsprojekte durchzuführen. Die Stipendiat*innen residieren im Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften in Bad Homburg. Das Center veranstaltet darüber hinaus regelmäßig Workshops, Konferenzen und Seminare.
